Tipping on Mt. Kilimanjaro: A Heartfelt Way to Say “Thank You”

Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro is an adventure like no other. It’s a journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, personal achievements, and unforgettable memories. But behind every successful trek is a dedicated team that works tirelessly to make your climb safe, comfortable, and enjoyable.

From your guides who lead the way, to the porters who carry your gear, to the cooks who prepare nourishing meals, every member of the crew plays a crucial role. Tipping is a meaningful way to show your gratitude for their hard work and commitment.

Why Is Tipping Important?

Tipping is a tradition on Kilimanjaro and a heartfelt way to say “thank you” to the team that supported you. The guides, porters, cooks, and other crew members often go above and beyond to ensure your trek is unforgettable. Your tip not only acknowledges their efforts but also helps provide extra income to support their families.

Why Isn’t Tipping Included in the Price?

We believe tipping should remain a personal gesture. By keeping it separate from the trek cost, we allow you the freedom to reward the crew based on your experience. It’s a personal way to show your appreciation for their exceptional service.

Can I Prepay Tips?

At this time, we don’t offer prepaid tipping. Tips are best handled at the end of your trek, allowing you to reflect on the crew’s hard work and tip according to your experience.

What If I Don’t Reach the Summit?

Remember, the journey itself is a remarkable accomplishment, and the crew is with you every step of the way whether you reach the summit or not. They work just as hard to guide, support, and care for you, no matter how far you go. Tipping is a way to recognize their unwavering dedication.

Can I Tip More or Less Than the Suggested Amount?

Yes! Our guidelines are here to help, but the final decision is yours. If the crew exceeded your expectations, feel free to tip above the suggested range. If you have concerns about the service, we encourage you to let us know.

Suggested Tipping Guidelines

Here are our recommended tipping amounts for the Kilimanjaro crew. These amounts are for the whole group and will be divided among the group members:

  • – Senior Guide: $25–30 per day
  • – Assistant Guide: $20–25 per day
  • – Cook: $15–17 per day
  • – Waiter: $12–15 per day
  • – Porter: $10 per day
  • – Summit Porter: $10–13 per day
  • – Toilet Crew: $12–15 per day

For example, if your group has 4 people, the total tip for the cook would be $15–17 per day, shared among the group members.

How Should I Give Tips?

The best way to give tips is to collect the money from the group at the end of the trek and distribute it during a tipping ceremony. Placing the tips in individual envelopes for each crew member is a thoughtful way to show your gratitude.

Donate Gear or Clothing

In addition to tipping, you can make an even bigger impact by donating clothing or hiking gear you no longer need. Warm jackets, hiking boots, gloves, or other outdoor equipment can make a huge difference for the crew.

At the tipping ceremony, you’re welcome to hand over any items you wish to donate. These gifts are deeply appreciated and go a long way in helping the crew members perform their jobs more comfortably.

A Simple Act of Kindness

Tipping and donating are more than gestures they’re ways to show appreciation for the people who made your Kilimanjaro adventure possible. While tipping is optional, following the guidelines ensures the crew feels valued. Larger tips and donations of gear or clothing leave a lasting positive impact on their lives.

At Nafika Tours, we’re here to make your journey unforgettable—for you and for the incredible team that supports you. If you have any questions about tipping, donating, or anything else, don’t hesitate to reach out.

We climb as a team, we celebrate as a team, and together, we create memories that last a lifetime. Thank you for showing your gratitude and making a difference.
